Situated on the bank of the river Cauvery.Tiruchirapalli the forth largest city in the state was a citadel of the early Cholas which later fell to the Pallavas never realy managed to retain control of this strategic city and lost it to the Pandyas several times.This tug of war finally ended when the chollas reserted themselves in the 10th century. The fort of Tiruchi Continued to be in their possession until the decline of the empire after which it became a Vijayanagara stronghold.

When Vijayanagara empire collapsed in 1565,Tiruchi came to occupied in turn by the Nayak of Madurai , the Marathas ,the Nawabs of Carnatic the french and finally the British. But it was under the Nayaks of Madurai that Tiruchi flourished and prospered in its own left and grew to be the city that it is today. Tiruchi is a fine blend of tradition and modernity built around the rock fort. Apart from the fort there are several churches, colleges and missions dating back to the 1760s. With its excellent infrastructure facilities Tiruchi will serve as a good base to see central Tamil Nadu.


By Air
Tiruchirapalli has an airport (5 km). Indian Airlines connects Tiruchi with Chennai, Calicut, Kochi, Sharjah, Kuwait and Colombo. Airlanka also connects Colombo with Tiruchirappalli.

By Rail
Tiruchirappalli is an important junction on the Southern Railway. It connects Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tirupathi, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Rameswaram, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Nagore, Mysore, Kodai Road, Kanniyakumari, Mangalore, Quilon, Mumbai, Howrah and Ahmedabad.

By Road

Rock Fort
Tiruchi's most famed landmark is an 83m high rock which is the only out crop in the otherwise flat land of the City. The most amazing fact about the rock is that it is one of the oldest inthe world - approximately 3,800 million years, which makes it as old as the rocks of green land and older than the Himalayas. The sheen aboutness of its rise in an attention grabber in itself, of which very little remains, but the temple at the summit of 344 steps news out of rock leading to the top where there are inscription dating back to the 3rd century B.C. Hardly anything remains of the remnants but the main gaurd date is still infact the fort played an important part during the carnatic laws and according to an inscription, mainly contributed to lay the foundations of the British empire in India. Atop the rock is the Uchipillaiyar koil, a temple dedicated to Lord Vingayaka from where one can enjoy a panoramic view of Tiruchi. At light of stops lead to the Mathrubutheswarar of Thaymanaswami temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva where the lingam is a projection of the rock itself. Below the Siva temple there are two pallava cave temples that have beautiful sculptures of the 6th and centuries. At the foot of the Rock fort is a tank and a Pavilion which are used during the float festival of the temples. Near the tank are the home where Robest Clive lived when he was in Tiruchy and an 18th Century Christ Church built by Revernd Schwartz of Denmark. The home is now past of Thiruchy's famous St.Joseph's College.

Srirangam
The most important pilgrim centre in the district is located on an island just 7 kms from Tiruchirappalli. Srirangam, surrounded by the waters of the River Kaveri on one side and its tributary the River Kollidam on the other, is a 600-acre island-town enclosed within the seven walls of the gigantic Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple. This is the seat of the pontiff of the Vaishnavite, who are the worshippers of Lord Vishnu.

There are not less than 21 gopurams here in this temple, one of which is the tallest in South India. The 72m high 13-tiered Rajagopuram was built in 1987 and this tower dominates the landscape for miles around, while the remaining 20 gopurams were built between the 14th and 17th centuries. Originally, there was just a 20 small shrine where the temple is today. but it was added on to and expanded by Cholas, Cheras, Pandayas, Hoysalas, the vijayanagar kings and Nayaks of Madurai and today Srirangam stands as the biggest temple in the country.

Tiruvanaikkaval (7 kms.)
The temple here has a Shiva lingam almost submerged in water and is meant to represent God incarnate as water. The water flows from a subterranean spring into the sanctum sanctorum. The Lord's name Jambukeswarar is derived from a legend that an elephant once worshipped Lord Shiva under the holy Jambu tree.

Thiruvanaikkaval or Jambukeswara Temple
Situated 2 kms east of Srirangam, this beautiful Shiva temple steals the show from the larger Ranganathaswami temple because of its excellent architectural design. The temple is named after the elephant that is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here. Installed under an ancient Jambu tree, the lingam is partially submerged by water and meant to represent the God as Water.


Grand Anicut (Kallanai)
It is one of the greatest engineering marches of India. This irrigation dam built across the River Kaveri by Karikala Cholan in the second century A.D. and later strengthened by the British. The dam is 329 m long and 20 m wide and still very much in use.

Mukkombu (Upper Anicut) (18 kms.)
Another dam called upper anicut or Mukkombu which is about 685 metre long constructed in the 19th century. The River Kollidam branches off from the River Kaveri here. This is another picnic spot with lush greenery and a park.

Vayaloor: (8 kms.)
The Lord Muruga Temple here is set amidst lush green vegetation.

Samayapuram: (20 kms.)
This is a very important place of pilgrimage famous for its temple dedicated to the goddess Mariamman.

Puliancholai: (72 kms.)
Pulliancholai is 72 km from Trichy which is on the foot high of kollimalai, a place of scenic beauty. This forest area is cool and green with the added attraction of the small water falls and strength. Pulliancholai is a beautiful place for one day excursion.

Tiruvellarai: (25 kms.)
Tiruvellarai is a place for Vishnu Temple 25 kms away from Tiruchirappalli town. The Tiruvellarai Temple is famous for its Architecture and Swastika shaped water tank.

Gunaseelam: (24 kms.)
Gunaseelam is situated 24 km away from Tiruchirappallirappalli on the north bank of Kaveri River. There is a Vaiashnavite Temple and the name o the God is Lord Prasanna Venkateshwarar. It is a place for worship, festivals and also for mental relief or alleviation.

Pachamalai: (80 kms.)
Pachamalai is spreading green hill range. It is a picnic spot to enjoy nature. is famous for its Architecture and Swastika shaped water tank.

Planetorium
Anna science centre/Planetorium is located on pudhukottai Road, Near Airport, Programmes in Tamil and English version is shown daily Timings- TAMIL: 10.30 a.m., 1.00 p.m., and 3.30 p.m. ENGLISH: 11.45 a.m. 2.15 p.m., 4.45 p.m.

Government Museum
This is located in Rani Mangammal Mandram, Trichy-2. Bronze and stone sculptures are on display here. Admission is free; the museum is open on all days except Fridays.

Lourdes Church
This church is located near to Rock-fort Teppakulam. Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is the replica of the Basilca of Lourdes. The world famous place of pilgrimage in Southern France. It is a remarkable feat of Indian craftmanship and stained glass drawings.

Nadhirsha Dargha
Nadhirsha Dargha is situated near Main Guard gate just 4 kms away from central bus stand. This Dargha is an ancient holy place in this town. The biggest and elegant dome in this Dargha is built in Indo-Saracenic Architecture. Urs is the famous festival in this dargha.
