Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is a hill town in the north eastern part of India. It is situated at an altitude of 1496 meters above sea level. Shillong remained the capital of Assam, before the formation of Meghalaya in the 1974. The place, the people and the climate all combined together to create an amiable atmosphere, to make Shillong Meghalaya an ideal holiday destination throughout the year. Cheerapunjee, the wettest place on earth is only 56 kms away from Shillong. Shillong has beautiful lakes and waterfalls, and is set in pine forests and green mountains. It is a popular hill-station which the British used to call the Scotland of the East.


By Air
Guwahati is the nearest airport from where Shillong can be reached by bus or car. Daily buses also connect Shillong with Guwahati airport. Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd, under the aegis of the Government of Meghalaya, has commenced regular helicopter flights connecting Shillong and Tura to Guwahati.

By Rail
Guwahati is the nearest railhead and is well-connected to the rest of the country.

By Road
Both Deluxe and ordinary bus services are available. Meghalaya Road Transport also runs regular bus services in Meghalaya.


Shillong Peak
1965 metres above sea level and 10 kms from the city, offers a panoramic view of entire Shillong, and is also the highest point in the State.

Sohpetbneng Peak
1,343 meter, 20 Kms from Shillong, regarded as sacred by the Hynniewtrep people, is set amidst a beautiful scenic view against the backdrop of a sacred forest.

Ward's Lake
A century old picturesque lake. Located in the heart of the city, popular for short garden walks and boating. The local people however prefer to call it Nan Polok (Polok's Lake) after an executive engineer named Mr. Pollock.

Umiam Water Sports Complex
Developed upon the mighty reservoir of the Umiam Hydro Electric Project, at Umiam, 16 kilometres beforereaching Shillong. The campus consists of a beautiful Orchid Lake Resort, the Nehru Park. Besides it offers a wide choice of exciting water sports activities.

Botanical Garden
Located just below the Ward's Lake, this garden has a plethora of indigenous and exotic plants. It also houses rareand colourful species of birds.

Lady Hydari Park
Lady Hydari Park, stretching over a km is replete with roses and blossoms of exquisite hues and coloursOwes itsexistence to Lady Hydari, the wife of an erstwhile Governor of Assam. It has an excellent mini zoo cum deer park.

Golf Course
Shillong Golf Course is considered to be the "Glen-eagle of the East" at the United States Golf Association Museum. It was set in a valley at an altitude of 5200 ft in 1898 as a 9 (nine)hole course and later converted into a 18 (eighteen) hole course in 1924 by Captain Jackson and C. K. Rhodes.

State Museum
The State Museum is located in the state central library premises with a good collection of artifacts of North Eastern India in general and Meghalaya in particular.

Bishop and Beadon Falls
Both cascade down the same escarpment into a deep valley, the mass of water dissolving into misty sparks.


Elephant Falls
12 kms on the outskirts of the city the mountain stream descends through two successive falls set . A well paved footpath and a small wooden bridge connect to two smaller falls which areequally beautiful and captivating. These are the Wei Iaplam Falls and the Wir Phang Falls.

Spread Eagle Falls
Located within the Shillong Cantonment, on the outskirts of the city, lies a sparkling waterfall which looks like an eagle with wings spread.

Sweet Falls
Situated near Happy Valley at a distance of about eight kilometers from Shillong. It resembles a straight pencil of wateremerging from a large size water pipe, as it drops vertically over a distance exceeding two hundred feet.

Crinoline Falls
Located in the heart of the city adjacent to the Lady Hydari Park, lies the Crinoline Falls which cascades through its jungle path. At the foot of the falls there is a well maintainedSwimming Pool.

Diengiei Peak
Located to the west of the Shillong plateau, Diengiei Peak is just 200 feet lower than Shillong peak. On the top of Diengiei, there is a huge hollow, shaped like a cup, believed to be the crater of an extinct pre-historic volcano.

Dwarksuid
A beautiful pool with wide, rocky sand banks located on a stream alongside the Umroi-Bhoilymbong Road is known as Dwarksuid or Devil's doorway.

Kyllang Rock
Located about 11 kilometres off Mairang, is a several million years old steep dome of red granite rising to an elevationof about 5400 feet above sea level.

Sacred Forest
Mawphlang
One of the most celebrated sacred-groves of the State is the grove at Mawphlang about 25 kilometres off Shillong. Preserved since time immemorial, these sacred groveshave wide range of flora, thick cushion of humus on the grounds accumulated over the centuries, and trees heavily loaded with epiphytic growth of aroids, pipers, ferns, fern-allies and orchids.

Cheerapunjee (Sohra)
Better known as Sohra, Cheerapunjee is situated 56 Kms from Shillong and 1300 metres above sea level and is known all over the world as the rainiest place on the planet. Besides a number of roaring water falls, including the famous Nohsngithiang falls the lovely town is also famous for its limestone caves, orange, honey, a headquarter of the Syiem of Sohra and a Centre of the Khasi Culture and literature.

Noh Kalikai Falls
A few kilometres to the west of Sohra (Cherrapunji), this waterfall is a breathtaking beauty.

Kshaid Dain Thlen Falls
Located near Sohra, meaning the falls where the mythical monster of Khasi legend was finally butchered. The axe-marks made on the rocks where Thlen was butchered are stillintact and visible.

Mawsynram
56 Kms from Shillong and is known for the Giant Stalagmite formation shaped into a "Shivalinga" and found inside a cave known locally as 'Mawsymbuin'.

Jakrem
64 Kms from Shillong, a potential health resort having gushing hot-spring of sulphur water, believed to have curative medicinal properties.

Ranikor
140 Kms from Shillong, a place of scenic beauty. Ranikor is one of Meghalaya's most popular spots for angling, with an abundance of carp and other fresh water fish.

Dawki
96 Kms from Shillong, is a border town, where one can have a glimpse of the neighbouring country of Bangladesh. The colourful annual boat race during spring at the Umngot river is an added attraction.

Nongkhnum Island
Nongkhnum Island is the biggest River Island in Meghalaya and the second biggest island in Asia, after MajuliIsland in Assam. Located about 14 Kms from Nongstoin, the district hqs. of West Khasi Hills, it is 20 to 25 sq. kms in area. Within the Island, there are big trees and areas of grassland and natural playground suitable for playingfootball and golf and plenty of fishing pools.

Tourist Places in Jaintia Hills

Jowai
Jowai, the headquarters of the Jaintia Hills district is situated 64 Kms away from the national highway. A picturesque town circled by the majestic Myntdu River.

Thadlaskein Lake
56 Kms from Shillong. According to legend this lake was dug with the ends of bows by members of 290 clans of USajiar Niangli, a rebel general of Jaintia Raja, to commemorate the great exodus of the clans.

Megalithic Remnants- Nartiang
65 Kms from Shillong, was the summer capital of the Jaintia Kings, of Sutnga State. Huge monoliths form the striking landmark of the village. The Nartiang menhir measures 27 feet 6 inches in thickness.

Syndai
An important village of Jaintia Hills which is famous for a number of caves and caverns in the limestone-borne area, used as hide-outs during war times between Jaintia Hills and foreign intruders.

Syntu Ksiar
Syntu Ksiar, which means 'golden flower' is a vast pool of calm water, where the river Myntdu which almost encircles Jowai, appears to come to a sudden halt providing a remarkably beautiful scene.

Tourist Places in Garo Hills

Nokrek Peak
The highest point of the Garo Hills region of the State, Nokrek Peak stands 1412 metres above sea level. The mother germo plasm of Citrus-indica has been discovered by science researchers withinNokrek Range. This discovery led to the establishment of the National CitrusGene Sanctuary-cum-Biosphere Reserve at Nokrek covering an area of forty sevensquare kilometres.

Tura Peak
A majestic hill stands on the eastern flankof Tura, the largest town in the Garo Hills region of the State. It peaks 872metres above sea level. A tourist-bungalow, an observatory and aCinchona-plantation are located at Tura Peak and its environs.

Imilchang Dare
This waterfall is located close to theTura-Chokpot Road in West Garo Hills district. The deep, wide pool at the bottomof the fall with its wide and expansive surroundings make it an excitingswimming pool, full of fish of varied size and colour.

Balpakram
A National Wildlife Park, located in SouthGaro Hills and 167 Kms from Tura. It is home to the rare Lesser Panda, the Indian bison and the Stag like Serow. A variety of medicinal herbs locally called "dikges" grow abundantly in Balpakram.

Naphak Lake
Located at a distance of 112 Kms from Tura, ideal for fishing and bird watching with the river Simsang flowing nearby.

Siju Caves
The famous limestone caves of Siju are located near Naphak Lake.


Police Bazaar is the central place in Shillong where you can get almost everything when it comes to shopping. Apart from this there is Bara Bazaar or Lewduh. Here you can pick up all ethnic stuff from exotic fruit and pickle (bamboo shoot recommended) to forest honey, particularly at the mega market on the eighth day of the unique Khasi week. Good buys include mounted butterflies, hand-woven shawls, orange honey, black mushrooms, Khasi dresses for women, pineapple, orange and other fruit products. The interesting shopping area is Bara Bazaar. There are seasonal fruits and other fresh produce, local handicrafts and exotic items.
