Kashmir valley is described as a paradise on earth. Chashma Shahi springs Shalimar Bagh, Dal Lake, etc., in Srinagar; Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, etc., in the valley; Vaishno Devi temple and Patnitop near Jammu, etc., are important tourist centres. Jammu & Kashmir, commonly known as Kashmir, the territory is bounded on the north by Afghanistan and China, on the east by China, on the south by the state of Himachal Pradesh and the state of Punjab in India, and on the west by the North-West Frontier Province and the Punjab Province of Pakistan. Kashmir covers an area of 222,236 sq km (85,805 sq mi). Jammu and Kashmir are really three regions: the foothill plains of Jammu; the lakes and blue valleys of Kashmir rising to alpine passes, the high altitude plains and starkly beautiful mountains of Ladakh which lies beyond those passes. The Indus River flows through Kashmir, and the Jhelum River rises in the northeastern portion of the territory. Kashmir possesses a more equable climate than that of southern and central India, and the beautiful Vale of Kashmir is a noted resort region. Srinagar is Kashmir's summer capital and Jammu, the winter capital.

Situated between 32.17 degree and 36.58 degree north latitude and 37.26 degree and 80.30 degree east longitude, the total area of the State is 22,22,236 sq. kms including 78114 sq kms under the illegal occupation of Pakistan and 42,685 sq kms under that of China, of which Pakistan illegally handed over 5130 sq kms to China. The State is bounded by Pakistan, Afghanistan and China from the West to the East.

Nearest Jammu airport is 8Kms from the city centre. Flights from Delhi and Amritsar link to all the three main regions of the state - the Kashmir Valley, Ladakh and the Jammu region.

Jammu Tawi Railway Station is an important railhead of Northern Railways. Just 2 km from Jammu is the railway station.

The population of Jammu and Kashmir has the highest proportion of Muslims of any Indian state, about two-thirds of the total. Kashmir

Rich and redolent with the flavour of the spices used –cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, saffron, etc. -- Kashmiri food can be the simple meal of a family, or a 36-course wedding banquet called Wazawan. The staple diet of every Kashmiri is rice; the most preferred being the dense, slightly sticky grained Kashmir variety, which is prized in the Valley. Kashmir is famous for its Wazwan, predominantly non-vegetarian. Rice is the staple food. Mutton, chicken and fish are of prime importance cuisines. Instead of sweets Kehwah, Persian tea, is served after wazwan which is usually served 7 to 10 courses at weddings and parties- a sign of lavish hospitality. Several restaurants in Srinagar, mainly at Residency Road, serve Kashmiri Wazwan. All the better hotels have restaurants generally serving Indian, Continental and Kashmiri cuisine. Other restaurants are mainly located at Boulevard, Lambert Lane.

Ladakh

Ladakh has traditional foods like mukh available at Leh Hotels & Restaurants. Better hotels and Guest Houses provide Continental, Indian & Ladakhi cuisines. A traditional tea suitable for chilly winters called gur chai (buttered salty tea) is available at restaurants / tea shops. Local breads are also available at some shops in Leh Bazar.

Jammu

Traditional Foods of Jammu are Morel (Gushi) Palov, Madra (lintel cooked in curd), Oria (Patato/Pumpkin in mustard sauce), Maani, Khameera, Katha Meat, Shasha (raw mango chatni), Kasrod and Timru-di-Chatni.


Tulip Festivals-Kashmir has the Asia's largest tulip garden called Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Siraj Bagh Cheshmashahi Srinagar, in the foothills of Zabarwan range withan overview of Dal Lake.The festival is held annualy in the month of April when tulips are in full bloom. The sprawling tulips of varied colours make the garden look like a silken carpet with intricate designs. The scene is simply captivating with floral charm. It is a visitor's memorable delight.

Carpets
Carpets are the perfect representative of the world famous Kashmiri arts and crafts. Main features of these Kashmiri carpets are that they are hand woven and knotted and not machine made and never tufted. The yarn used in carpets normally is silk, wool or silk and wool. Finishing of the artwork and the material makes carpet expensive for many, but one can always assures for having a collector's item in possession because a carpet is a life long investment.

Namdas are less expensive then carpets. These rugs made from cotton and woolen fiber which is manually pressed into shape. These colorful floor coverings are decorated by chain stitch embroidery which is done beautifully by woolen and cotton threads.

Shawls
The finest shawls to the world is given by Kashmir. Kashmiri shawls are made from three fibers they are wool, Pashmina and Shahtoosh and decorated by Sozni, Motifs embroidery types. Pashmina, yarn is spun got from the hair of the ibex though pure pashmina is expensive, but semi or mixed Pashmina is affordable. Shahtoosh, the legendary ‘ring shawl’ is famous for its lightness, softness and warmth but it is a banned item now.

Papier Mache
These products are made of the pulp of paper and adhesive. To make a product of Papier Mache, paper is soaked in water till it disintegrates. It is then pounded, mixed with an adhesive solution, shaped over moulds, and allowed to dry and set before being painted and varnished. There is a big variety in artistry and the choices of the colors. Prices are decided by the material used to decorate this artwork.

Silverware
It is one of the ancient arts in Kashmir, Kashmiri silverware, especially ornamental picture-frames, is in great demand in the markets of United States, European countries and Australia. The work known as ‘Naqash’ determines the price of the object, as does the weight.

Wood-Carving

Wood Carving is one of the best known cottage industries of the valley .Kashmiri walnut and Chinar wood has a fine texture and smooth grain patterns, making the wood expensive. The price of the wooden piece of craft depends on the grain pattern of the wood used, the detailing of the carving and the part of the tree used.

Silk Tweeds

Sericulture and tweed weaving is under the monitoring of the departments of State govt. the cocoon reared in Kashmir is yielding an extremely fine quality is nourished on fine mulberry leaves; Kashmir has a wide range of silk textiles of varied designs. The weaves popularly known as 'chinon' and 'crepe de chine' are of finest quality produced from the yarn.

Basketry
Willow rushes that grow in plenty in the marshes and lakes of Kashmir are used to make some beautiful objects, ranging from shopping baskets and lampshades to tables and chairs, all in affordable ranges.


Shopping in Jammu and Kashmir is a truly pleasant experience. Along with the matchless scenic beauty, the region is so rich in traditional handicrafts, you can also call it easily a veritable shoppers' paradise. Several tribes live in different parts of this state. Kashmiri artisans are generally the women folk of the families.
