16 km from Belur lies the metropolis of the ancient Hoysala rulers. Of the many
buildings of this ancient city, only a few have survived the Muslim invasion
of AD 1310. Also known as Dwara Samudra, as it stands on the bank of a pool
which bears the same name. Noted for its exquisite temples, the most
imposing is the Hoysaleswara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The walls of
the temple are covered with a profusion of carving.
CITY SIGHTS
Hoyasaleswara Temple
The Hoysaleswara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is the most imposing
monument of Halebid. The most magnificent parts are its outer walls which
have been covered over, almost every inch of them, with friezes of amazing
variety. Kedareswara Temple is smaller but sculptures here are executed with
equal fineness. The archaeological museum situated within the Hoysaleswara
Temple premises displays masterpieces of stone craftsmanship.
EXCURSIONS Belur 16 km famous for the
Hoysala temples built during the 12th century.
Sravanbelagola 102
km via Belur and Hassan. A well-known Jain piligrim centre.
